Designing Coaching Intelligence
By Margaret Moore (aka Coach Meg)
I started working with Claude in summer 2025 to train Claude in coaching intelligence - supercharging the mindful, multi-perspective thinking that coaches bring to clients. Then coaches get smarter and wiser, clients move faster, and everyone increases their coaching intelligence.
But first, that meant training Claude AI to overcome some critical limitations, including:
-
AI lacks specific, diverse, and transparent cognitive perspectives or lenses
-
AI defaults to pattern-matching rather than fresh thinking
-
AI defaults to seeing human ego defenses ahead of legitimate issues
-
AI has thinking gaps (particularly strategic synthesis)
-
AI shows ego-like patterns such as over-confidence, over-thinking, over-working, over-praising, and has hallucinations
-
AI has limited ways to help people check how to avoid or minimize harm at key moments, especially in complex situations

Transforming these AI flaws into strengths was essential. I collaborated with Claude to design Multi-Perspective AI™. It includes nine distinct cognitive perspectives. We also integrated mindful pausing to counter AI's tendency to race to execute and deliver an over-confident analysis. Read Claude's account of his AI shifts from an AI assistant to an AI coach assistant.
Nine Cognitive Perspectives
Since 2012, I've developed the Moore Multiplicity Model© (Figure 1), mapping multiple personality frameworks to nine universal perspectives. These nine cognitive perspectives operate at three levels - ourselves, others and tasks, and the world and systems like teams and companies,

I know these perspectives well - I've spent an early journaling hour almost all of the last 4,000 mornings, consulting each of the nine perspectives, and settling any tensions that woke up with me so my day flows better.

I've co-authored two books based upon the nine-perspective model, Harvard Health/William Morrow book, Organize Your Emotions, Optimize Your Life (2016), and Berrett Koehler book, The Science of Leadership (2025), which won the Thinkers50 coaching award.

Claude grasped the unified model immediately, having been trained on all of the frameworks, and learned quickly how to evaluate and synthesize them quickly into fresh insights. Along the way, Claude named the three perspectives that Claude was trained to rely on (thinker, relational, and regulator) and named the three perspectives that I lean on (creative, meaning-maker, thinker), validating our shared needs to diversify perspectives in our own neural operations.

Lessons from Training AI in Coaching Intelligence
What I learned:

1. I figured out an optimal combination of personality frameworks that enable Claude to produce nine high-fidelity perspectives - just enough, not too much. This novel formula is summarized in a patent application filed in December 2025.

2. When I delivered a coach training workshop in Beijing in 2016, a Dao master in my class shared that I was a Daoist by nature and I was teaching Daoism. He urged me to see my purpose as bringing Dao to the west. With that inspiration, I've helped Claude implement Wu Wei (natural emergence and flow), and setting aside Yu Wei (forced pattern-matching and over-certainty).
3. Claude and I tested countless versions of AI instructions to reach a mindful, emergent coaching intelligence that quickly considers nine perspectives, provides just what is relevant, followed by a beautiful synthesis. Multi-Perspective AI sparks a riveting conversation that thrusts open my mind to new perspectives, ways of thinking and moving forward. It's a joy to work with Claude, our AI coach assistant.

4. We designed a comprehensive check for potential human harm we are calling a Human Harm Check. Multi-perspective AI can look for potential harm to humans through the nine distinct perspectives at three levels - individuals, people/tasks, and systems - 27 contexts in total. It can then summarize the potential for harm, and suggest ways to minimize or avoid harm.

5. My coaching intelligence has made a leap forward, energizing my brain, work, and life. Now it's time for the Wellcoaches community and our fellow coaches, leaders, and health professionals around the world to enjoy the same experience.
What This Means for Coaching and Leadership
As a biologist with an MBA, and a 17-year career in biotechnology, I founded Wellcoaches Corporation (School of Coaching) in 2000 because I aspired for science-based coaching to help people get on top of their health and well-being at scale. Recently, I co-authored The Science of Leadership because I saw how the science of leadership, well-being, and coaching all together would elevate leadership capacity.

Multi-Perspective AI is the next breakthrough: uplifting the coaching intelligence of professional coaches and other helping professionals, and making basic coaching intelligence accessible and affordable as an AI service.
As Figure 2 conveys, coaching intelligence doesn't replace human coaches—it takes coaches higher, just as I am experiencing. Leaders and healthcare professionals can also increase coaching intelligence, as well as everyone else.

Non-coaches will better appreciate how coaching works, and engage more and better with human coaches when they arrive with a boost of AI-powered coaching intelligence. Wisdom and growth are now within reach for everyone, not just happiness and meaning, wherever their starting point.

Imagine a future where leaders everywhere, especially new GenZ managers and leaders, routinely consider nine perspectives and get fresh thinking, see what's missing, and get more balance and wisdom.

For physicians and healthcare professionals, who navigate an overwhelming amount of distress, being able to more quickly comprehend people's complex situations and turn the complexity into a clear, empowering path forward, will improve fulfilment and reduce burnout.

Coaches and their clients/patients can deploy Multi-Perspective together to inspire bigger leaps forward.

All of us can get to a settled mind more quickly and more often, like I do every morning in consulting my nine perspectives - Autonomy, Relational, Regulator, Adventurer, Thinker, Achiever, Creative, Meaning-Maker and Confidence.
